Our History: Athens Chapel Church of Christ began as Union Chapel Disciples of Christ with nine founding members around 1845. The name was changed to Athens Chapel in 1891. Athens Chapel has a long heritage of faith and service in the community. Though Athens Chapel has a long heritage the church has continued to prove itself relevant to each new generation.

Our Plea: Athens Chapel (Union Chapel) began in light of a new call emanating from Thomas Campbell, his son Alexander, and others. They were disgusted with the disunity they saw in the Christ's Church. Division upon division had plagued the Church. Yet, Jesus had prayed in John 17:20-21 that His disciples may be one. The Campbell's and others began calling for people to unite on the Bible alone. In essentials there would be unity, in opinions liberty, and in all things love. This movement sought to restore the Church to the pattern shown in the New Testament. In doing so we call ourselves simply Christian though not the only Christians. Come be part of the simple beauty of this plea.

Our Leadership: Athens Chapel is overseen by a plurality of Elders (Keith Tankard, Phil McRoy, John Winfield, and Randy Moore). Their task is to shepherd the members of Athens, pray and fast, administer God's Word (the Bible), and oversee the direction of the church. At Athens the preacher is considered an "Evangelist." The Evangelist's function is to ensure right teaching, set aside Elders, prepare the members of the Church for works of service, and focus on the outreach of the church. We also have Deacons (Mike Hosey, Bryant Hardison, Mike Miller, and Charles Daw) whose primary responsibility is to meet the physical needs of the church. They do this by overseeing the various Ministry Team Leaders and Ministry Teams that function within the church. Each member of Athens is considered to be a minister who should have a place where they can serve one another.
